Defeat—and the Allied occupation of Japan under the GHQ began. After the fall of the Shidehara Kijūrō Cabinet, Hatoyama Ichirō, who had been expected to become prime minister, was purged from public office. In May 1946, Shigeru Yoshida assumed the post of prime minister. Thus began the long-running legacy known as the “Yoshida School.” The curtain rose on a ruthless struggle between the party politicians and the Yoshida faction.
